about

My father's uncles Burton and Bill taught him about livelihood and survival by the river. Uncle Burton also killed two men for stealing his boat, and he threw their bodies down the neighbor's well. Not far from where that happened, my father taught my brothers and I some of the ways of the Brazos

lyrics

Johnson County, 1981
Some men were found in a well,
They said a thirty-aught-six gun
Did em in well they had it comin
If you ask my uncle Burt.
You can't hinder another man's livelihood
And expect to not get hurt.

Poverty and floods,
Poke salad, squirrels, and beans.
When you're sittin on the bottom
You can't live below your means.
My daddy knew that river
Before he turned thirteen,
Before they built the Whitney dam
Turned a monster into a stream.

I am the water.
I am the stone.
I am the mudcat.
I've got the Brazos in my bones.

If you drive down 916 long enough,
You'll come to a burned-out shack.
Peach trees all gone wild in the yard,
And a filled-in well out back.
You'll feel a coldness movin through you,
From your stomach around to your liver.
You'll leave there knowin you should never get between
A Merrill and his river.
